Running For Fun?!?

And she's running!

Can't believe I ran a half marathon! Well, I runked (run/walked). I did the Disneyland Tinkerbell. So much fun! The sense of accomplishment - insane! Making goals and making them happen.

Boys promoted out of 8th grade and about to start high school! Where does the time go? Love these boys and I'm so proud of the men they are becoming. So different. I'm so happy I raised them as their own and not as "twins". Their independence from each other is makes their loving brotherly moments so very precious. They are both so proud of each other, it makes my heart smile.

I'm still working on getting our lives organized and in order. Junk drawers are a thing of the past. I pretty much trained the family that everything has a place when it comes to those drawers, and they're abiding. Now my office, on the other hand, looks like an episode of Hoarders! Everything that doesn't have a home, gets dumped in there. Night before cleaning ladies, even things that have a home end up piled in the office. That is my goal for the weekend.

Next week will the fourth of July week and starts the long vacation. Family fun at our house for the annual sky diving weekend, then a few days at my sis's and ending the following week in San Diego at Comic-Con 2015! Wish Mike could be with us, but someone needs to hold down the fort and tend to the animals.

Just a quick update of what's happening here.  Hope to post some before and after pictures of some of the house overhauls in the near future.

From My Train to Organizing Chaos

Did you miss me?

It's time I went back to trying to organize my life. By life I mean:
My time
Kids' time
Work
home
family
health
meals
finances...

Yup a complete overhaul. I read somewhere that if you want to lose weight, you should first declutter your surroundings. I don't want to wait, but I can see that feeling surrounded by mess, I feel less motivated and overwhelmed. I then feel guilty when I spend time on me instead of spending time on the house or the kids.

So I've made a plan. Decided to overhaul myself, the boys, the family's health, and the house all at the same time. Concentration is mainly on the house,  and in turn, the boys, with small steps towards the health changes. Well, big steps, but not the quite the focus that I plan to give it later in the year.

Food/Nutrition/Health:

I'll start with the food and health, since that will be faster to cover. It's summer, so we're busier out of the house more often than during the school year. We're a very impulsive and spur of the moment type of family. We can all be lazying around and suddenly someone says, I want to see a movie. Then someone says, what's playing? Another looks it up on their phone, and 10 mins later we are jumping in the car. Once we're out of the house, we end up not only at the movies, but also taking care of an errand or two and then go out to dinner.

It's hot. I mean it's really hot this year in California. We do NOT want to run the oven or a hot stove. I've also been working an insane amount of hours on a work project (which is finally starting to wind down - hallelujah), and by the time I take a break for dinner, I just don't feel like cooking, or am way too exhausted, or the rest of the family is famished, so it's a drive to Mexican or to pick a pizza.

All day while I work, the boys need to fend for themselves and I'm just shoveling whatever I can grab out of the fridge in a second and then jump back to work. The best choices of what to put in my mouth are not made at these times, and really, what 13 year old will choose carrots over chips?

Step 1 - get rid of the crap.
That was easy. The kids and us ate the crap so fast, just because it was there.

Step 2 - Buy healthier grocery "fast food"
When shopping, I didn't buy more crap. I bought more greek yogurt, more fruit, no soda, no white bread, veggies I know Hunter will eat.

Step 3 - Clean and organize the fridge.
Lots of food was thrown out monthly because we couldn't see it and forgot it was there. I moved the healthy snacks to a door shelf, so it's easy to find and grab on the go. Also one shelf, the one right at eye level is serving that same purpose.

Step 4 - Plan at least 3 meals a work week at home.
the hardest part about cooking is deciding what to make. So I look in the fridge, see what we have, and plan my meals around that for 3 meals out of the week. I plan on that increasing as the year goes on, but I have to be realistic. We eat out on Fridays or fend for ourselves. I don't cook on Fridays. One other day can be a restaurant or pizza day. Weekends, I generally cook a big Linner (late lunch, early dinner) on Sundays. Saturdays can be whatever, I'll cook or we'll fend for ourselves, or go out, depending on where we are and what we're doing.

That's it for now. As time goes on, I'll work on cooking more days out of the week, working more on the nutrition, and teaching the boys to cook. Baby steps.

______

Organizing time and life:

I'm a list maker. I make a To Do list everyday. If I do something not on my list, I write it on there and then cross it off as completed. I love the sense of accomplishment. I used to write on a day planner calendar, but never seemed to have the room I wanted and it was boring to look at (yes I like to go back and look at what I've done). Then I wrote them on a list pad, but the papers would detach and then I couldn't look at them. When I was minus any steno notebooks, I'd write my lists on index cards, but I would misplace the list I was working on, and again, not good to refer back to. I really wanted to use my lists as sort of a diary.

I make lists for the boys. If I don't make them a list, it doesn't get done unless I nag or yell. I want to teach by example, and this is something I can excel at. When their list is done, they get free time for computer or video games. I notice, especially with AJ, the sense of excitement and accomplishment they get when they're getting things on their lists crossed off.

How I did it:

Mike and I have really gotten it together on our iPhone calendars. The cloud syncs the calendar to each other's  phones, so we always know what is planned for a day. That is really helpful since I am the one that is generally making all the appts for the family. I only have to add to one calendar and we all get it.

I decided to use a K&Co Smash book as a personal To Do book and love love love it. I dedicate a page per day, and random pages will include other stuff that I just feel like adding. Example one page can include my list of things to do that day that are non-work related, an occasional work related item -like a presentation, and other details about the day, such as if we went to a movie I will note what we saw and if we enjoyed it.

Created a daily list for the boys for chores and must dos and another list for day to day activities for the summer.
Example for daily chore list includes personal hygiene, room clean up, kitchen chores. I list out everything, like hygiene includes
shower
wash face
do hair
brush teeth
deodorant
foot care
sun protection
The daily chores get done, but not all the hygiene items daily. They are 13 year old boys after all.

Example for daily summer activities is:
Make Something Monday (cook or bake from a recipe, create something artistic, etc)
Technology Tuesday (make a ppt, online tech related research,
You get the picture. This one, we really didn't stick to. My fault. I was a way the first week of summer and so slammed with work, I didn't stick to enforcing it. If I don't make them do it (which they love this stuff once they start on it) then they'll just not do it.

My favorite thing I did is made a house overall to do list.
I dedicated a notebook to just this. Every room has a page. Example of a page for a boy's bedroom:

Clean out dresser
  • purge clothes that don't fit
  • purge clothes that don't get worn
  • purge clothes that are too trashed
Clean off shelves
  • Sort books
    • donate
    • gift
    • save for grandchildren
Clean under bed
Clean out closet
  • Sort hanging clothes
  • Sort shoes
  • Sort legos by color
  • Sort misc crap to keep
Clean out desk
  • Purchase desk drawer tray
  • Call Geek Squad for system check-up and clean-up
  • Create charging station for hand helds
Touch up paint
Spot clean carpets

I also added a need to buy section. AS we clean stuff out, I'm sure there will be things I need to replace, like sock, church shirts, etc, desk supplies

I added a non-room related page which includes things like, replace slider screen, wash windows inside and out, clean off garage door, create living room picture wall...

Every room, one by one will get handled. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

Ever since the flood I've been really concentrated on getting the house all set. Things I've wanted to do for years is finally getting done, but more on that to follow.

_______

In making all these changes, I see how it affects the boys. How they feel accomplished when completing a To Do list. How they check the calendar on our phones to see when they're open for an activity, or when they have an appt. AJ asked if he helps on some of the other harder chores, if I'd consider paying him, like cleaning the windows inside and out. Today, Hunter wanted a snack and reached for an apple.

Life is good and it's getting better.

Sweet Sierra Jane

So 6 years ago we had to put down a great dog, Jake. He passed on 07/07/07. To Sierra he hung the moon. She loved him so much. 6 years later, 07/06/13, Sierra is now with him again. My heart is so heavy. She was my own very first canine child. She was the best puppy ever, such a good girl. I'm going to miss her incredibly, and that silly smiley face, super bad breath, and beautiful eyes. She was so loyal and loving, there just couldn't be a better dog.

A few months back we brought a rescue puppy in to our family, Buster. He really respected Sierra and was very cautious with her. Sometimes he would get frustrated because he really wanted her to play, but she would just stare at him, and he'd settle right on down. He'll never be a replacement, but it sure is nice to have someone furry to cuddle with when you have a giant hole in your heart.

We'll miss you so much, sweet puppers. Say hi to Jake for us.

Down and Dirty on the Farm

Baby steps to the Tough Mudder. Survivor Mud Run at Del Osso Farms in Lathrop was a blast. I now know I need to work on cardio, trail running and some arm strength because those monkey bars were not happening. We had a great time getting through the rest of the obstacles. Basically, it served the purpose I was looking for. A good short run, that would tell me what I needed to work on to prep for the Tough Mudder.

We're in the 2nd month of our Insanity workout. Haven't lost a pound, but I can do a lot more push ups than ever before. Not so bad for a 42 year old little girl who likes to play in the mud. I'm thinking this example of it's never too late is great for my boys. Hopefully this getting heart healthy bug will hit them, too. Lead by example.

Insanity

Life is Crazy.
One day everything is smooth sailing. The next it's just out of control. Not always in a bad way.
This is one of those times. Good way times. Happy times. Busy times. CrR@Zeee times.

Above is a picture of the Boys on the cruise we took in September in Italy. You wouldn't know it, but 4 months later, the captain of that ship fell overboard in to a lifeboat as the ship tilted, killing many. First of that man is crazy if you think I believe that story for one single second. Secondly, how crazy that we were on that ship just four months ago, and now it's never to sail again. So surreal. But my boys will always have an interesting story, that they were once passengers of the ill fated Costa Concordia.

Speaking of being crazed and deranged.. I registered to participate in the September Tough Mudder.
Hello? What was I thinking? They are going to laugh this 42 year old lady right out of there. But how kick ass will I be when I pass that finish line.

Freakin' insane I tell you!

I figured how else would I get motivated to get in shape? I'm getting old. Gravity is taking over. All these extra pounds are really weighing me down. It's time to get busy. What better motivation then facing impending death by psycho obstacles? My team mates offer extra motivation, as we are a huge team of co-workers getting ready to battle this Mudder out!

So my days are filled with work, taking care of the family, and exercising. Many times the house has turned in, and you'll find me on the hamster wheel. Or the house is still asleep, and I'm jumping around like a lunatic in the living room, or again running on the hamster wheel. Today I even tried the Shaun T Insanity DVDs, and let me tell you, just the Fit Test made me want to cry. My arse and legs are KILLING me. But the plan is, finish procrastinating, and get back on the hamster wheel. I think I'll put on a little Prince - Let's Go Crazy on the iPod.

Happy trails!

Life is good!

Back from Italia.
Loved it!
I would live there in a second.
Unbelievably, only gained 2 pounds after a week of cruising and a little over a week with famiglia.
Food was AMAZING!
But we are back.

So incredibly busy at work, and more often than not, in the office. No time for much else, and everything is being neglected. Not everyone, just everything else. But this means I have a job. Having a job helps pay for my home. And pays for food on the table. And pays for kids' Christmas presents. And pays for fun nights out with the family. And pays for gas to to get all the places I need to go.

I have a roof over my head.
I have a full belly.
I have a healthy family.
Life isn't good.
Life is GREAT!

Maintaining It or Losing It? How About a Little Pick Me Up?

I've been doing Weight Watchers, but really, just trying to change my eating habits all together. I've been doing pretty good, if I may say so myself. I've lost my 5%, and working it on down to my 10%. Well, I reached my 5% on Monday, and so, for those of you who don't know WW, you then set a new goal. I set my next goal at my 10% from the starting weight. Now, I looves my WW app on my iPhone. With the new plan it make it possible to stay on track. I would be lost without my app. The problem is, I have to use it. And I haven't. Since Monday, I lapsed in to the lazy zone.

Well today I went to my handy dandy app to get back on track and my daily points target changed from 29 to 35?? What, I can eat more now? What's up with that? I looked everywhere to figure out why I suddenly had 6 extra points. Sometimes I find it hard to meet the 29 points, so I wasn't overly ecstatic about it. I finally broke down and called their 800#. Crapola, when I met my 1st goal, it switched me to maintenance mode, instead of weight loss mode. Hmph! My app failed me.

Well, I've been maintaining for a few weeks. It seems every weekend there was some party or something to celebrate, the shower, Audrey's party.... So although I did great through out the week, I was getting it all back on a party day. At least it was a minor loss every week, .2, .3... You get the drift. That last 1.5 pounds to my 5% took forever. But I made it, and now I'm back on track. I think.

Speaking of points... I made tiramisu for the 1st time. I actually made 2. #1 was with the regular savoiardi cookies and I think I overly doused them in the espresso, it was a bit soggy, but all the flavor was there. The 2nd one I used 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 vanilla savoiardi cookies and it was perfect! So much work, I tell you. But it was fun, and now I know, less liquid is better. Mike was lovin' it. He's the one that kept bugging me to make it. I know I won't get too points crazy, because I don't care for tiramisu too much. It's good, but overly rich for my taste. Give me a baguette any day over a piece or tiramisu.

Tonight, London Broil slow cooked in a delectable mushroom sauce, with fresh herbs over risotto, and .... hmmmm ... asparagus? Surprisingly low in points the way I prepared it. I'm eating some baguette with it, since I ran a lot this morning.

Now, off to drop the boys at church and to pick up some fresh bread and asparagus.
